Place to play at Boscarn Parc

boscarn parc

A campaign by young Gypsies in Cornwall for a safe place to play has paid off with the launch of a multi-purpose sports pitch.

The £49,800 project, at Boscarn Parc, near Redruth, is part of a wider revamp of the site. It lies on what was an overgrown field, plagued by fly tipping and used for grazing horses.

The idea for the sports site came from the young Gypsies themselves, who took part in a consultation exercise organised by Cornwall Children’s Trust and identified a safe place to play as their main priority.

With the help of Devon and Cornwall Police and TravellerSpace, which supports Gypsies, Irish Travellers and New Travellers in Cornwall and the South West, they successfully applied to the Community Spaces programme for help.

They were actively involved in the entire bidding process, including making presentations to council officials, visiting other sites for inspiration and helping to organise the launch party.

The £49,800 Community Spaces grant has transformed the site and provided a valuable amenity for all local youngsters as well as the wider community.

To celebrate the completion of the project, a launch party attracted more than 50 visitors, who played five-a-side football, learned circus skills and took part in dance and craft workshops.

A spokesman for TravellerSpace said: “With comments from youngsters including ‘I love it’ and ‘really really really good’ we hope the children have many happy years of playing.

“The young people worked really hard to make their plans a reality. They should be proud of what they have achieved for their community.”

The young people were supported TravellerSpace, Pool School, Devon and Cornwall Police, Cornwall Council and the Eden Project.

Now that’s what we call making an entrance!

A fabulous wood carved entrance at Hitcham Play Area!

The Hitcham Community Area and Play Space group are putting the final touches in place in time for their £36k play area to be opened to their local community in June.

The new natural play area is set in the picturesque surroundings of the Suffolk countryside and the project has been designed and built to enhance the natural environment.

The beautiful and intricate new entrance is one of many wood carvings that are apart of the project and already local crowds are being drawn in to the new space.

It truly is a magnificent sight - we wish the group all the best with the launch in June - more pictures of the project can be found in our Flickr stream.

Woodlands Play Project in Birkenhead, Wirral.

Last week saw glorious sunshine for a day of family fun to mark the official launch of the Woodlands Community Play Project in Birkenhead. Clifton Park Residents’ Association have worked in close partnership with Wirral Council to complete the project, which received a grant of almost £50k from Community Spaces.

The site now boasts a magnificent new play area for younger children as well as a ball court and equipment aimed at older youths. This will help ensure that all local young people can benefit from the project.

The launch was supported by a number of local partners including the Local Authority, Community Police, Fire Service, Library Service and Housing Associations.

Activities on offer included sports, arts and crafts, story time and Karaoke. The Community Police helped serve free refreshments and the cake stall served up some real treats! The highlight for many was the Fire Service quad bikes with the children getting a chance to sit on them and hear about the work of the Fire Service.

Tom Fyson, Community Spaces Facilitator for the project said, “It’s always a treat to be able to enjoy the successful completion of projects. Members of the Residents Association have worked hard to ensure this project could be delivered and really deserved the success which could be seen at the launch. They already have plans for future projects and I’m sure there will be many more successes to come.”

“Congratulations to all involved. I’ve really enjoyed supporting you and helping make sure all your hard work has paid off. You should all be very proud of what you have achieved.”

Flying Elephants in Wattisfield!

Actor Lex Shrapnel with Jockey Bear and local youngsters on launch day.

The Wattisfield Community Centre and Recreation Ground Committee didn’t down the tools after the successful launch of their play project last year. The group have been working hard to encourage more people to fully use the new space by hosting events and publicising the site.

The group are now going one step further and are planning to make elephants fly to get people into the park!

Linda Dyer, Treasurer of the group said: “We are planning to hold a “When I see an Elephant fly” day, we have parachuted Teddies in 2008, Pigs in 2009 and this year we are parachuting (toy) Elephants from a telescopic forklift supplied by a local plant hire company. Tomlinson Groundcare provide us with a gaitor to collect the fallen animals and take them to the medic tent, its all quite good fun, but maybe not when your teddy has to be resuscitated!”

The event will take place on Sunday 27th June and we look forward to seeing pictures of the flying elephants! Good luck with the event… sounds like a lot of fun!
