Flagging up a green opportunity

Posted on 25th November 2011 by

green flag community awardsHere at Community Spaces we think that all the hard work groups have put in to making their green space a healthier and happier place should be rewarded.

The Green Flag Award, the national standard for parks and green spaces also has a Community Award, which you may be able to apply for. It is free of charge and will recognise your achievements and bring your site into the spotlight.

This may mean more support, involvement and can even unlock sources of more funding. As an added bonus winners will get free annual membership to BTCV’s Community Network to join thousands of other groups gaining access to discounts, insurance, funding information, training opportunities and much more.

The only conditions on applying are that site must be freely accessible and managed solely by the group, although management can be supported by the landowner or local authority.

For more information visit the Green Flag Community Awards website.

There are local advocates in each region to help groups apply for the award. Katie Lowry covers the North West but can put you in contact with your local advocate – email k.lowry@btcv.org.uk for more information or support.

The applications deadline is January 31 2012 and judging will be take place next summer.

Good luck!

One group, four awards!

Community Spaces

Here at Community Spaces, we love to hear about community groups that have been recognised for their great achievements.

However, it is rare when we here about a group that has won four awards in the space of two years!

The Iremongers Pond Association was created two and a half years ago when they obtained the lease for Iremongers Pond in Nottingham. Over the past couple of years, the group and local volunteers have put a great deal of volunteering time and effort into improving the pond and it’s surroundings for both fishing, walking and natural enjoyment.

Back in November, the group received just over £21,000 from Community Spaces to create a walkway around the pond so people can enjoy walking safely around the area.

The group’s hard work and community involvement has meant that the group have won four community based awards.

The first award they won was the National Association of Neighbourhood Management, Cleaner and Greener Innovations Award back in 2009.

Following this, the group went on to be in the highest awarding category for the East Midlands in Bloom competition for two years running.

Then, 2010 saw the group win a Green Flag Community Award, and already this year, the group have been awarded the ‘Clubmark for Angling’ award that recognises quality, well-managed angling clubs.

However, it’s not just community awards that the group are being nominated for. They have recently been short listed for the NVCO photo competition.

Julian Taylor, chairman of the Iremongers Pond Association took a photo (pictured above) of Bill Roughton, the groups secretary when he was cleaning out the pond, and it has been shorted listed for the photo competition.

Congratulations to the group for all their success and we look forward to seeing the finished project when it launches in May.

Friends of Bennion Pools scoops another award!

Posted on 30th July 2010 by

The Friends of Bennion Pools has been awarded a Green Pennant Award for the Bennions Pools Nature Reserve near the Walkers crisp factory in Leicester.

The Green Pennant Award is a national award that recognises high quality green spaces in England and Wales that are managed by voluntary and community groups. The Award is part of the Green Flag Award scheme, the national standard for quality parks and green spaces.

The Friends group was awarded just under £50k to re-develop the site, increasing access to the pools and encouraging local people to get involved.

Chair of the Friends group, John Greasley said, “We are delighted to be receiving this award – it’s a real boost for the local people who have volunteered so much time to the pools and the projects we run here. We’re also thankful for the Community Spaces funding, without it what we have created here would not have been possible.”

The group worked closely with Leicester City Council to develop the project. Since receiving the funding they have organised many events encouraging local people to get involved in further developing the site and ensuring that it is kept clean and safe for everyone to enjoy.
