Pastel drawing of Octavia HillThere’s just over a month to go for you to nominate contenders for this year’s Octavia Hill Awards, named after the pioneering social reformer and c0-founder of the National Trust.

The Trust is looking for green heroes of all ages… Maybe they’ve saved a piece of green space from development, or passed their love of nature to the youngsters they teach.

You can nominate any number of individuals or groups, including yourself, for any number of categories. Just remember to submit a separate nomination form for each entry.

A panel of judges will select a shortlist for each category and the final vote will be put to the public to find the overall winners. Voting will take place at the end of March 2013.

The categories are:

Natural Hero - An exceptional individual who has devoted their energy and free time to protecting green spaces and inspiring the local community to do the same.

The People’s Campaigner - Celebrating someone in the public eye who has worked to inspire people to enjoy and protect the outdoors.

Green Space Guardians - A group or organisation, big or small, that has championed green spaces and places.

‘Love Places’ Award - Specifically for National Trust volunteers who have gone beyond the call of duty.

The closing date for entries is February 28 2013. Click here for more information – and good luck!

Congratulations to the Friends of Teesdale Park, whose work in restoring their local green space has been recognised with a Catalyst Achievement Award.

Secretary Ray Morton, park manager Shaun Underwood and group chairman Paul Gibson collected the Community Group Award in the Catalyst Awards 2011. Catalyst is the leading voice for the third sector in Stockton-on-Tees.

The judges praised the Friends for their tireless work with local residents, businesses and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council to restore Teesdale Park. The area had been subject to fly tipping and vandalism and was under-used by local people. The Friends secured £48,000 from Community Spaces and worked to undertake improvements and add new facilities, restoring the park to its former glory.

Don’t forget to let us know if your group wins an award – we can celebrate your success and encourage others to keep up the good work!
