Funding lights up the pathways in Sheffield Cemetery

Posted on 12th April 2010 by
Local school children enjoy the new pathways

Community Spaces funding of just under £49k has allowed the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust, in Sharrow, to light up the Cemetery with lanterns in a celebratory opening event.

Until this year the Cemetery paths were in too poor a condition for the lantern procession to pass through. The Community Spaces funding has made the restoration and widening of the Cemetery paths possible. Futher funding and support was provided by Groundwork Sheffield, the Rotary Club, and Section 106 monies. Access has been much improved for all users, especially for people with walking difficulties, those in wheelchairs as well as pushchair users.

The opening of the new route was celebrated on Sunday 11th April and  specially made lanterns, by children from Sharrow Sure Start, lit up the pathways and led the procession, ending in a jazz lounge style musical celebration.

Sounds like a fantastic celebration. More details and photographs can be found at: http://www.creativeaction.net/view.php?id=15

All Saint’s Community Development Company in Birmingham is awarded their grant.

Groundwork UK has today announced nine projects that will be benefiting from upto £450k each, through the lottery-funded Community Spaces programme.

The nine successful projects have been developing since Summer 2008, when the limited flagship grant awards were announced. The following projects will benefit from the funding:

The Dean & Chapter of Exeter Cathedral will be using the grant award to realise their Vision of the Green – they will be transforming the area around the cathedral into an accessible green space, which will nurture wildlife.

Saltash Waterfront Resident’s Association in Cornwall will be using funding to open up access to the Elwell Woodlands; the project will also see the installation of an iconic 20 metre Celtic Cross.

Paignton Town Community Partnership will be using just under £450k from Community Spaces to transform a former green space on the Paignton sea front into a state of the art natural play park.

All Saints Community Development Company will be using the funds to create an open village square off a busy High Street in Kings Heath, Birmingham.

Dudley Canal Trust will be revitalising and opening up access to the Dudley No.2 Canal Corridor, which is a 4-mile stretch of canal between Dudley and Sandwell.

Friends of Tees Heritage Park in Cleveland will be improving accessibility to the park and installing a trail around the site using digital and Bluetooth technology.

The Byker Centre in Newcastle has secured funding to create a community garden, which will include an amphitheatre, play facilities as well as more spaces for recreation.

Halton Community Association will be creating a Heart of Halton using £450k from Community Spaces. The project will open up a green space for all ages, the facilities will include a toddler and teenager play area, a multi-use games area, a skate park as well as a wildlife area.

Heeley Development Trust has planned to use the funds to create the Heeley Millenium Park in Sheffield. The local community hope to take more control of the existing local park and introduce better play facilities, BMX trails and community orchards.

Rosie Winterton MP & Yorkshire & Humber Minister at Friends of Sandall Park

The Friends of Sandall Park in Doncaster will be ‘showing-off’ their Community Spaces funded outdoor gym project to the Minister for Yorkshire & Humber and MP for Doncaster, Rosie Winterton, later today.

Sandra Crabtree, Chair of the Friends group and other representatives will be on-hand to show the Minister how the £20k grant from Community Spaces has helped them ‘design-out-crime’ in the park.

Sandra, Chair of the group, said, “The golf course project has opened up a massive area of the park that was previously unusable due to anti-social behaviour. The area is now a safe area for everyone to use and usable greenspace has been increased at very little cost.We are delighted to show this project off to a government minister.”

We make magic happen!

Friends of Charlton Brook angle £48k

The Friends of Charlton Brook in Sheffield have received £48k from the Community Spaces fund to restore a dam to attract more anglers, walkers, and wildlife watchers.

The accumulation of silt in the dam has shrunk it to half its original size!  The dam will be de-silted to improve ecology and encourage more people to visit the area.

Fighting Fit in Sandall Park

Posted on 10th June 2009 by

After two years of campaigning to ‘design out crime’ the Friends of Sandall Park have installed a new outdoor gym with funding from the Community Spaces programme.

The project is part of the wider development of the former golf course in a bid to stamp out anti-social behaviour and encourage a healthier environment.

Visitors to Sandall Park in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, will be fighting fit as the outdoor green gym makes up part of the fitness trail already being used by enthusiasts.
