Big day for the blue knight

Felix Wilson, aged 10, won the fancy dress prize with his home-made Blue Knight costume

The Friends of Stationers Park in north London have launched their new playground after a whirlwind couple of weeks.
Anyone who has organised a launch event will know the effort required, so when the Friends were given just two weeks’ notice that their project would be ready, they swung into action.

The playground – which benefited from a £49,940 Community Spaces grant – features a fort at its heart, so the Friends organised a medieval-themed event, with a fancy dress competition, stilt walker, face-painter, musicians and other attractions.

Kle Savidge, chair of the Friends group, says: “Our event was turned around in less than two weeks as that was the most notice the council could provide on exactly when the fence around the building work would come down. I think I speak for everyone when I say it looked like it had been months in the planning.

“We are now fundraising for stage two of the playground build.  If anyone has time to get involved, please do get in touch by emailing friendsofstationerspark@yahoo.co.uk

Good luck with the next phase…

Stapeley Playground nears completion

Posted on 13th October 2011 by

stapeley work in progress 131011Improvements to a brand new children’s play area are progressing well at Stapeley, near Nantwich in Cheshire.

Tracey Knight of Stapeley Parish Action Group (SPAG) says: “After three years of planning we are delighted to see our project nearing completion. Phase 2 has been funded by our Community Spaces grant of almost £50,000 and is currently being project managed by Groundwork Cheshire and constructed by County Landscape Development.”

The Stapeley Parish Plan, published in 2008, highlighted a lack of children’s play facilities in the community, so Stapeley Recreation Group, a sub-group of Stapeley Parish Action Group was given the task of setting up a new play area.

Tracey adds: “We were so delighted to receive this huge amount of money because it’s enabled us to enhance the play site further with a multiplay unit for the older children, a springy see saw for the young ones, extra seating, cycle racks, a tarmac pathway and landscaping with trees and shrubs.

“We are now busy organising our launch event, which will take place in November. The local children are so excited and can’t wait to try out the new equipment. They’ve watched it being built bit by bit every day on their way to school for the past couple of weeks. It’s been so rewarding to see the site being used by so many and I echo the comment repeated by so many parents – it’s been long overdue!”

Phase One of the site was opened in July by local MP Edward Timpson. It includes a zip wire, supernova, pendulum tyre swing, toddler swings, a spinning dish and a multi play unit for younger children. Since the opening the play area has been extremely busy with local children of all ages, especially throughout the summer holiday.

Good luck with the launch.

Group chair Sorrel Gordon-Foxwell (right) welcomed district councilor Julie Redfern, who cut the ribbon to launch the project, which was funded through a £42,608 Community Spaces grant.

Sorrel says: “We are all delighted with our new games area and we hope the residents of Great and Little Chesterford will enjoy these new courts for many years to come.”

Ware Skate Park taking shape

Posted on 21st September 2011 by

ware skate park Work in progress… it’s all taking shape at the Ware Skate Park Scheme in Bedfordshire.

WASPS chair Jan Wing says: “The shape and outline of the ramps is now becoming clear and very soon the surfaces will be in place. Local users are very excited by the park and eagerly awaiting the chance to ride the new park.”

The photo shows the frames for the ramps with the novice run to the right.

Plans are now under way for the launch on October 16, with competitions, barbeque, music, and some VIP visitors including local BMX racer Dan Blanche.

It’s all happening at Halton

Years of hard work and determination have paid off for a dedicated team at Halton in Lancashire with the official opening of a skate park, games area and playground for the village.

The project, funded mainly through a £450,000 Community Spaces grant, was launched by local MP David Morris, who unveiled a commemorative plaque before showing off his skills on the state of the art skatepark.

Children from the local playgroup and primary school tried out the playground and games area, while BMX riders and skateboarders were keen to test out the skatepark, which was designed by specialist firm Maverick.

Brian Jefferson, chairman of the local parish council and project manager for the scheme, said: “It’s been a lot of hard work, but we have created something that is not just for this village today, but for everyone in years to come. We have had skateboarders coming from as far away as Brighton to enjoy the fantastic facility we have built here.”

Fundraiser Maureen Richardson added: “Many people were very surprised at the variety of activities we were able to provide over the opening weekend. Many families stayed for the whole day and we had about a dozen tents on site overnight. The skate park competition was simply amazing.

“The village is buzzing and all the children at school are very excited. We are really proud of what we have been able to achieve and are pleased that users are recognising our efforts.

“Thank you once again for enabling us to put the heart back into Halton.”

Place to play at Boscarn Parc

Posted on 29th June 2011 by

boscarn parc

A campaign by young Gypsies in Cornwall for a safe place to play has paid off with the launch of a multi-purpose sports pitch.

The £49,800 project, at Boscarn Parc, near Redruth, is part of a wider revamp of the site. It lies on what was an overgrown field, plagued by fly tipping and used for grazing horses.

The idea for the sports site came from the young Gypsies themselves, who took part in a consultation exercise organised by Cornwall Children’s Trust and identified a safe place to play as their main priority.

With the help of Devon and Cornwall Police and TravellerSpace, which supports Gypsies, Irish Travellers and New Travellers in Cornwall and the South West, they successfully applied to the Community Spaces programme for help.

They were actively involved in the entire bidding process, including making presentations to council officials, visiting other sites for inspiration and helping to organise the launch party.

The £49,800 Community Spaces grant has transformed the site and provided a valuable amenity for all local youngsters as well as the wider community.

To celebrate the completion of the project, a launch party attracted more than 50 visitors, who played five-a-side football, learned circus skills and took part in dance and craft workshops.

A spokesman for TravellerSpace said: “With comments from youngsters including ‘I love it’ and ‘really really really good’ we hope the children have many happy years of playing.

“The young people worked really hard to make their plans a reality. They should be proud of what they have achieved for their community.”

The young people were supported TravellerSpace, Pool School, Devon and Cornwall Police, Cornwall Council and the Eden Project.

Technical Know-How: Post Installation Inspections

New space net installed at Broadway Village Activity Park, Worcestershire.

A slight diversion from the normal news you get on the blog – but one which might help lots of groups that are still developing their projects.

If you’re one of the many groups using Community Spaces funding to create a recreational facility, such as a new play area, a multi-use games area, an outdoor gym or even a skate park, you will  need to know about Post Installation Inspections.

These inspections are needed on the equipment that has been installed to ensure that the facility you have created meets required British Standards.

The British Standard for play equipment and surfaces is BS EN 1176: 2008 and it states that all sites must have an inspection by an independent Register of Play Inspectors International (RPII) Annual Outdoor Inspector. This means that you need to ensure whoever is carrying out your post-installation inspection is recognised by the RPII.

The usual fee for this type of inspection is somewhere in the region of £500.

For more information about Post Installation Inspections and to find a registered inspector near your project visit: www.playinspectors.com

Your Facilitator will also be able to help you with this. If you’ve got any other questions please use the comments form below and we’ll get back to you.

Sustainability through stories

Hilly Fields Natural Play Area, London.

The Friends of Hilly Fields in London, who completed a fantastic natural play  project in their local park with the help of Community Spaces funding, are now using their Sustainability Grant to run story-telling sessions in the park. Which we think is a great way to get local children and parent’s involved and interested in what’s happening on the new space. You can find out more by visiting their website: http://www.hilly.org.uk/2011/06/story-telling

If you’re stuck for ideas on how to use your Sustainability Grant – or have used the funding to do something really inspiring please join our Sustainability Grant discussion.

In the meantime – we hope the story-telling goes well for our Friends at Hilly Fields!
