Young  people from the area have contributed to the plans through workshops and consultation sessions.

Groundwork Manchester’s Kate Morley, who is project managing the new play area, says, “This will be a 21st century version of a playground, using features that allow children to play more freely and creatively. The project is a great example of Groundwork working together with local organisations and communities to create better neighbourhoods.”

The total project will cost £90,000 - the water company, United Utilities, have pledged £40,000 towards this through its United Futures programme.

Newly re-vamped Meols Park Play Area, Meols, Wirral. Thank you to the friends group for the picture.

Eighties and nineties pop group, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), co-founder and singer Andy McClusky paid a little visit back to his childhood park in Wirral last week.

McClusky visited the new play area that the Friends of Meols Park have recently re-vamped using funding from the Community Spaces programme.

McClusky wrote about his visit to the park on his own blog, and said: “How different it looks! The Friends of Meols Park have done a fantastic job of raising money to transform a tired and neglected old public space into a great new magnet for the local kids.”

More about the visit from Andy McClusky can be found on the Friends of Meols Park blog.

Local People came together to celebrate the opening of a new Community Spaces project in Skerton, Lancaster. The Skerton Community Association secured a grant of just under £25,000 from the programme to create a small garden haven for the local community. Judging by the turn out – looks like this is set to be a real asset for both young and old!

Thanks to Community Spaces Facilitator, Rachel Summerscales, for sharing the pictures with us. To see more project pictures visit: www.flickr.com/communityspaces.

If you have pictures of your launch events, or even of how your project is progressing, then please share them with us by joining the Community Spaces Fund Flickr Group.

Meet the facilitators

Today was a rare opportunity for Community Spaces facilitators to meet up and find out more about each other and the projects they are helping through the programme.

Once through the first stage of application, community groups applying for funding are helped through the rest of the process by one of these friendly facilitators.
Rebecca Luff and Rachel Summerscales are two of the facilitators and they talked about the very first projects to come to fruition.  For Rebecca it was last week’s opening of a new playground in Rogate and Rachel claimed the first ever succesful Community Spaces at Fern Gore near Accrington which helped restore several wildlife lodges (or ponds) despite the windy and rainy launch!
