Posted on 15th March 2011 by

It’s getting to that time of year again where we can all enjoy the spring weather and get outside and love our parks!

To celebrate the beginning of the warm weather, Love Parks Week is celebrating its fifth birthday and is aiming to get over 1 million people out into their local park!

Love Parks Week is an annual celebration of our parks and green spaces. It is organised by Community Spaces partner organisation, Green Space.  Love Parks Week raises awareness of what our parks have to offer, and is a campaign to save these valuable community assets.

This year, Love Parks Week is running from the 23rd-31st July, so there’s plenty of time to plan how you are going to celebrate Love Parks Week in your newly developed Community Spaces project.

For more information on how to organise your own event, visit the Love Parks Week website.

The perfect Christmas present for Hawthorne Park Trust

Posted on 27th December 2010 by

The Hawthorne Park Trust gave their local community a Christmas present with a difference as they scooped up a prestigious community award.

The local community group were awarded with the North West Together We Can Community Empowerment Award.

The award scheme is designed to showcase groups that have strong community empowerment and cohesion activity.

In order for the group to win, they needed to demonstrate improvements in community engagement and innovative and inspiring activities that addressed the needs of their community.

Rachel Summerscales, the groups Facilitator who worked with them during the groups Community Spaces project development, wasn’t at all surprised when the group won the award.

“The group were fantastic throughout the entire duration of their project- they worked so hard with all different authorities to get the project complete, they are a perfect example of a community group.”

Community Spaces in the Snow

With Christmas only being 5 days away, a few of our Community Spaces projects have joined in with the festive fun!

St Andrews Parochial Church Council celebrated the launch of their Community Garden at the beginning of December with a large sprinkling of snow and Christmas spirit!

The group received £49, 794 from the Community Spaces programme to create a beautiful and tranquil garden in their churchyard.

During the festive opening, children from the local school sung Christmas carols, whilst visitors gathered around stalls selling hand-made Christmas wreaths, mulled wine and home made cakes.

Iman Kouchouk, A Grants Officer from Community Spaces went along to the launch.

“The garden was covered in snow and the group had wrapped fairy lights around all the trees, it was very seasonal!”

But the Christmas spirit didn’t stop there. East Bridgeford Park Renewal Group celebrated the opening of their new playground last weekend!

The new playground worth over £49,000 was funded by Community Spaces and was opened by the Mayor of Rushcliffe. The group then invited everyone to join them in their local hall where they enjoyed a Christmas Carol performance from the senior class.

The Community Spaces Team would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Friends of Northampton Racecourse

The Friends of Northampton Racecourse celebrated the opening of their new, dragon shaped, Adventure Play Project earlier this month to the tune of jesters and fire dancers!

The Midlands based group received £49,170 from Community Spaces to create a large natural play area for the all the residents and visitors of Northampton to enjoy.

The launch was hugely popular, with families attending from all round. Councillor Trini Crake opened the project and the celebrations continued throughout the afternoon with activities such as plate spinning and juggling!

Thomas Skidmore, Programme Development Coordinator for Community Spaces went along to the event.

“It was great to see such an innovative design mixing fixed and natural play. The children playing seemed to be having a magical experience, and the launch also let them learn skills from a circus entertainer and a wacky science lesson!”

To see for your self the dragon shaped natural play area, then watch this video as Community Spaces, Thomas Skidmore, takes us around the project.

Community Spaces takes on Westminster

Posted on 3rd December 2010 by

Celebrity gardener Chris Beardshaw (pictured above) joined Groundwork’s Community Spaces team earlier this week at an event in Westminster to bring green space organisations together to discuss the future of our parks, playgrounds and community gardens at a time of cuts to public spending.

With a Groundwork commissioned ComRes survey of 443 local government councilors indicating nearly 50% feel their councils would be reducing their level of maintenance for green spaces due to budget constraints, we at Community Spaces are determined to highlight the value of these local green spaces to communities, and to not let the issue fall off the government’s agenda.

The event – introduced by Chris Beardshaw – pulled together organisations such as Natural England, The London Wildlife Trust and BTCV and included a discussion on how we can all work together to ensure communities continue to have access to quality urban green spaces and the chance to have their say on how they’re maintained.

We’re very pleased to say that the event was a huge success!  Every organisation that took part had a tremendous appetite to tackle the issue head on to make sure communities receive the support needed to thrive and improve their local environment.

To see the difference that Community Spaces has already made to local communities across England, please watch the short video below.

A chocolate dream becomes a reality!

Posted on 2nd December 2010 by

Here at Community Spaces we love to share all your stories!

Vicki Rooke from Bournville Area Residents Association sent her story in to us about how their group triumphed in improving their local neighbourhood!

The Chocolate Garden was an idea first born 3 and a half years ago by residents of ‘The Bournville’ in Weston super Mare.  They attended a  ‘ Spaces by Design’ training course at Trafford Hall in Cheshire and worked with landscape designers to think of ideas on how to transform a currently derelict area of wasteland in the heart of their neighbourhood.

After 3 years of consultation and publicity, the group have finally achieved their dream!  The group decided to create a community garden, opposite the already popular children’s’ park and right next to the shops, which could be a quiet, peaceful area for people to sit and enjoy.

The garden was named the Chocolate Garden because the neighbourhood is called ‘The Bournville’, named like the famous chocolate made by Cadburys.  The garden will have seating and planting beds, and a wall with a 27m long mural painted on it, which will depict the history of chocolate, right through from the cocoa bean from the rainforests to the chocolate that we know and love today.

Realising this dream involved presenting to the local housing association to be gifted the land, fundraising money to pay a Landscape Architect to turn ideas into reality, undertaking extensive consultation with the community, obtaining planning permission and an awful lot of fundraising!!

The group have fundraised £108,000, of which nearly £50,000 came from Community Spaces – this was a massive boost and meant the garden could go ahead!

After drawing up tenders and choosing contractors, work finally started on the garden in November 2010.

We hope the garden will be finished just before Christmas and we are planning a launch party in January 2011!
