Keeping people in the know…

The current play area at Thornham Magna Walks

A key problem that many community groups come across is how to ensure the local community are aware of and have the opportunity to be involved in the project you are delivering – after all many hands make light work!

Our friends at the Thornham Magna Community Open Spaces group in Suffolk - who secured almost £50k to create a new play area in their village - have decided to use one of the largest social networking tools, Facebook, to start sharing a photo diary of progress on their site.

Facebook has over 600 million active users and is a great way to start engaging people in what you are doing as well as sharing news and progress on developments.

Flying Elephants in Wattisfield!

Posted on 20th April 2010 by

Actor Lex Shrapnel with Jockey Bear and local youngsters on launch day.

The Wattisfield Community Centre and Recreation Ground Committee didn’t down the tools after the successful launch of their play project last year. The group have been working hard to encourage more people to fully use the new space by hosting events and publicising the site.

The group are now going one step further and are planning to make elephants fly to get people into the park!

Linda Dyer, Treasurer of the group said: “We are planning to hold a “When I see an Elephant fly” day, we have parachuted Teddies in 2008, Pigs in 2009 and this year we are parachuting (toy) Elephants from a telescopic forklift supplied by a local plant hire company. Tomlinson Groundcare provide us with a gaitor to collect the fallen animals and take them to the medic tent, its all quite good fun, but maybe not when your teddy has to be resuscitated!”

The event will take place on Sunday 27th June and we look forward to seeing pictures of the flying elephants! Good luck with the event… sounds like a lot of fun!

Consultation in Practice

Posted on 16th April 2010 by

The Thornham Magna Community Group, just outside Eye in the East of England, are currently preparing their stage 2 application to the Community Spaces programme for a new play area.

To ensure they are creating a project that is needed by local chidlren and young people they recently completed an Easter themed consultation event - their story and some great pictures can be seen at: http://www.thornhams.org/children-and-young-persons-consultation.htm

Some time ago we posted a blog piece about the importance of consultation and asked you all to share your experience and stories. We’d like to thank those of you who shared some great stories and tips, we’re still keen to hear from others, please follow this link to the original post.
