Friends Of Evington Park and Village Green and Leicester City Council Parks and Green Space Services have successfully secured over £25,000 from Community Spaces to install an Outdoor Exercise Area in Evington Park. The project is due to be launched later this month by Leciester’s own ‘Ironman’ – Manjit Singh.

The project incorporates 10 pieces of equipment, which will provide a full body workout, new seating and a landscaped picnic area. This will provide free access to Exercise equipment for all members of the Community to enjoy in the tranquil setting of Evington Park. Members of the local Community have been involved with planting the new trees and shrubs.

Local Ward Councillors have supported the project and Michael Johnson said “In this day and age many people are in need of exercise, this is a fantastic opportunity and once again Evington leads the way”.

The project will opened on 26 October 2009 by Leicester’s Ironman & Guinness Book of World Records holder, Manjit ‘Ironman’ Singh. http://www.manjitironman.com/ironman2.htm

Special thanks go to the Community Support Officers – Carol, Anna and Mike for their help and support, and also to Dr Paul Archer from the Heatherbrook Surgery for continually supporting the group.

Pictured with Chairman of the group, John Greasley, is Groundwork UK Grants Officer, Thomas Skidmore, who said: “This project is a great example of how a site can be completely transformed with Community Spaces funding and strong community involvement.

“The Pools look fantastic and there are lots of different elements that inspire you to walk around. The group also has several plans for future development which are very encouraging.”

Well done to everyone involved!

The group have been one of the first to join the ‘Community Spaces Fund’ Flickr group. We hope other successful projects will be inspired by Bennion Pools and start sharing their progress snaps too!
