Friends of Charlton Brook angle £48k

The Friends of Charlton Brook in Sheffield have received £48k from the Community Spaces fund to restore a dam to attract more anglers, walkers, and wildlife watchers.

The accumulation of silt in the dam has shrunk it to half its original size!  The dam will be de-silted to improve ecology and encourage more people to visit the area.

  1. Last week saw the contactors AMCO arrive on site and fence off the dam and immediate surrounding area. They also laid a temporary road for their vehicles to get on and off site without damaging the trans pennine way.

Yesterday the pumps were started and the stream that feeds the dam diverted.

Today over 6000 fish have been caught by the Environment Agency’s fisheries team and these will be rehomed in the nearby Tinsley canal.

Tomorrow the remaining water will be pumped out and the process of hardening the silt will begin.

BBC Radio Shefifeld and Look North are both supporting the group with the coverage of the works to completion.

  2. To date there have been 600 tons of silt removed from the dam. This means we are half way there :-)

1200 tons of silt out of an estimated 20,000 tons hardly seems a worthwhile exercise against what it must have cost,i have been quoted £60,ooo.That apart i would like to congratulate your group on the work that you are doing,Bri.

  4. Sunday 12th September 2010 sees the launch of the desilted dam along with other improvements on Charlton Brook Greenspace. Come along between 11am and 3pm to see what Friends of Charlton Brook volunteers have achieved.

    • Nisha Virdi says:

Well done Michelle and volunteers! Look forward to seeing some launch pictures – seems like only yesterday you were desilting and moving fish… fantastic to hear that you’ve reached the end of your journey… good luck for the launch!

  5. Anna Foxall says:

It would be great to know & see how you are getting on now, nearly a year after all the de-silting. I hope all the wildlife have resettled into their improved home!
